Adoption Information
The process works like this…when you go to the shelter you pick out the dog you want. Then you have to fill out an application. Applications for adoption are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. If approved, you can pick the dog up during a scheduled adoption appointment (this is scheduled when you submit your application) as soon as its 5-day holding period is complete. However, if the dog is old enough to be spayed or neutered, animal control will schedule your dog with a vet, and you pick him up from there. It’s that simple. The awesome animal control officers do most of the work for you! All you have to do is show up at the shelter or vet’s office to pick up your new friend!
While they prefer that applicants come to the shelter in person to interact with the animal prior to submitting an application for adoption, an online adoption application is now available that can be printed and faxed or brought to the shelter. A faxed application is not placed in line for a particular animal until the applicant calls Animal Control and receives an adoption appointment date and time. If an applicant submits an application in person at the same time a faxed application arrives for the same animal, the application submitted in person is given priority.
The cost of adopting a dog is $50.00, which includes a DHLPP-C vaccination, deworming of your new friend, an adoption information packet, and an implanted microchip. You, as the adopter, are responsible for the cost of spay or neuter and for returning proof of surgery to Animal Control. Adopters must obtain a rabies vaccination for their dog by the time the dog is 4 months old. When you provide proof to ACCAC that your dog is spayed or neutered, you are reimbursed $25 of the adoption fee, so your final cost for your new friend is only $25. It will be the most rewarding $25 you ever spend!
Rescue Information
In order to rescue a dog from ACCAC, the rescue must be a Georgia rescue with a Georgia Department of Agriculture license. A current copy of this license must be faxed to ACCAC (706-613-3545) along with a Rescue Transfer Form and a list of the names of people authorized to pull dogs under this license before a dog can be rescued. Licensed Rescue Groups may indicate that their application be placed behind all other applicants so that the group will accept the dog as a last resort when all other applications have expired. In this case, we ask that a representative of the group remain in touch with our staff regarding pending applications so that the dog can be transferred as soon as the last application expires. ACCAC does not work with out of state rescues, hold dogs (no space to do so), nor does it coordinate or provide transportation of any kind.
Holding Period for Impounded Dogs
Dogs are held for a minimum of 5 days if they are strays. This 5-day holding period does not include the day the dog is impounded or any day the pound is closed. During this period, if the animal is of good health and temperament, Animal Control will accept applications for adoption on a first-come, first serve basis if the application is approved. After this 5-day period, any day could be the last for ANY dog at the shelter. Owner surrenders do not have a minimum holding period at the shelter; they are available for adoption immediately. If you are interested in adopting or rescuing a dog, PLEASE don’t wait until a certain day to call. You should be organizing the rescue throughout the dog’s stay at animal control. If you wait until the last minute, the dog you want may no longer be available. Euthanasias occur everyday…not just on one particular day.
Lost & Found
Don’t forget, Animal Control keeps both ‘lost’ and ‘found’ reports on pets! If you have found a dog that you are keeping out of the goodness of your heart, feel free to call the shelter and let them know, just in case someone reports it missing!!
