Unfortunately, I was only able to get one good picture of Jackson, as my camera battery was starting to give out, but luckily you can see the beautiful red mottled coat of his. He is a very sweet and quiet dog, but right now he doesn’t seem very acclimated to people. That could be due to the fact that he was just picked up today. He was obedient and willing to have a leash put around his neck, but he just didn’t interact much. He did seem to enjoy his walk, and he explored his new surroundings. I think that once he comes out of his shell, Jackson will be a magnificent dog. He already is a beautiful one.
Update 1/30: Jackson is such a handsome dog! He has gorgeous red merle markings (like an Australian shepherd) and legs that are just a little too short for his body. He’s definitely nervous at animal control because he paces in his kennel and paces when he’s out with a volunteer. He never barks or whines; he just walks around like he’s in search of someone. Jackson has definitely been looked over during his time here (there have been so many adorable puppies!) and he currently has ZERO applications or back up rescues. Hurry in to meet this sweet gentleman and see if he’s a good fit for your home.

Please excuse Bruno’s terrible picture. Bruno was so excited to come out and visit that he did not want to hold still so I could capture his true beauty. Bruno may be 56lbs but he is all puppy. He has a short stocky build with a cute little tail that never stops wagging. Bruno’s owner says that he is housebroken and that he does well with other dogs. It says that he also does well with children. Bruno is a total snuggle bug and wants someone who will show him love back.
Update 2/6: Bruno is a very fun dog and is definitely a wiggle butt He walks politely on the leash and sat so still (except for a wiggly bottom) while I scratched his ears, back, and rump. He has a soft coat that is a deep, chocolate brown with a few speckles of white on his chest. As of Saturday, Bruno has ZERO applications or back-up rescues, so he needs to be rescued or adopted as soon as possible so he can start a new life. Louella just breaks my heart. She is extremely malnourished and weighs only 43 pounds when her frame suggests that she should probably be at least 60 pounds. She also has pressure sores on her legs and feet that are probably very painful. In spite of her horrible physical condition, there seems to be a spirit of a happy dog somewhere inside. Her little nub tail wagged just a bit when I scratched her back and she perked up when I offered her a treat. She seems to be very sad and depressed, but love and affection can go a long way in healing a broken spirit and that’s what Louella needs right now. As an owner surrender, her time is very limited at the pound so she doesn’t have the time she needs to fatten up and overcome her ailments in order to impress potential adopters. She needs someone who can see her true potential and who’s willing to put the time, energy, and heart in to making her the healthy and happy dog she’s supposed to be. Please don’t adopt Louella because you feel sorry for her; she needs to be adopted by someone who can see her true potential and really wants to make her in to a great dog, not a sympathy case. If you think you have the compassion and strength that’s needed to save sweet Louella, I encourage you to come out to visit her and add her to your home. She’ll reward you with years of love and loyalty.
update 2-7-10: This dog is AMAZING!! She is by far, my absolute favorite dog here. The AC staff loves her too. In the short time she has been here she has gotten less and less shy- imagine how well she’ll do in a loving home and not the pound! Louella might not look it in her pictures, but she is gorgeous. She’ll be even more so when she isn’t so skinny. Stop by and pet this sweetie and her sad eyes will melt your heart. I love, love LOVE this dog and you will too if you stop by and meet her. Louella spent her whole life living with other dogs, and so would most likely do just fine in a home with other nice dogs. Louella is on the submissive side- she just wants someone to love her and feed and care for her. Stop by soon- as an owner surrender she is living on borrowed time.

Ida was just brought into the shelter a few minutes ago. Her owners did not want her any more because they were moving. Poor little Ida is just soo scared. Little Ida is sooo cute but she is so nervous right now that all she can do is sit in the back of her kennel and shake. With a little bit of work this little girl can be a real sweet little lap dog! Currently Ida is too scared to leave her kennel and will growl at you when you approach. Perhaps once she is out of AC and into a home she will feel more secure. Currently Ida is available to rescue only due to her being scared and growly.

Hailey is CUTE! She hasn’t really mastered the leash yet, and prefers to be carried. Leash training is pretty easy to teach, however. She is a playful, active, loving puppy who is ready for an adventure! She loves to give kisses and would make a fabulous pet. Stop by soon to meet this cute puppy.
Update Saturday 2/6: My, my what a cute puppy! Hailey is an adorable girl who thinks she’s the cutest thing in the entire world. She’ll prance around on the end of the leash and loves to be petted. She’ll definitely need some puppy training because she currently thinks that she’s the one in charge of everything. There are great classes taught in many places in Athens (such as Pawtropolis & Pet Supplies Plus) and taking a class with sweet Hailey will definitely be recommended so that she can grow into the beautiful and well-behaved dog she’s supposed to be.

Toby was placed in the same pen as Sparky, but they are totally different in personality. Toby could also benefit from some leash training, but is a much calmer dog. He seems to crave human contact, and was delighted when we went into a play area and he had a chance to interact with me. He came over several times and put his head on my lap. He has definitely had previous owners, and would be so happy to have an owner again. He’s a laid back dog, and I think he’d get along well with anyone. There was a dog in an adjoining pen, and he barely paid attention to it. Older dogs so often get overlooked in favor of young puppies, but Toby is worth taking a look at. He’ll give you a lot of love.
Update Mon 2/8/10: Toby’s rabies quarantine ends today. He is VERY much out of time and needs to be rescued or adopted ASAP! Hurry in or call to save this fluffy boy!

Jabber Jaws (Jab for short) was brought in the Jib. Jab is a very outgoing puppy and picks up on things very quickly. As I was teaching Jabber Jaws to sit, he carried on a little conversation with me. Jab is very eager to learn and is able to master new skills very quickly. Jab loves to romp around in the soft grass and mud. Jib and Jab love to play with each other and clown around while they are waiting to be taken out.
Update Sat 2/6: Jab is one of the cutest pups that I’ve met in a long time! He has the most adorable perky ears and has the most wonderful puppy expressions. He’s a calm and laid-back puppy who seems to be submissive towards people, which is definitely a plus when it comes to training! In order to ensure that he grows into a great, well-behaved dog, I’d recommend an obedience class so that he can learn everything he needs to become a great dog. Jib and Jab were brought in together. They are super sweet little puppies. They love to play with each other and are always comical. Jib is the quieter of the two but he is just as sweet and loving. He loves being out in the sunshine and rolling in the grass.

James Dean is a stunning Akita Mix. He is a huge boy and loves to lean up against you. James Dean is going to need a firm owner because of his strength. He forgets how hard he can pull on the leash and has to be gently reminded that he has to walk like a gentlemen. James Dean is full of energy and would do well with someone who likes to walk or hike. Although he is full of energy, James Dean does enjoy just sitting still and having his head rubbed.
Update Saturday 2/6: James Dean is a very handsome boy. As mentioned above, he will need a firm owner who is always in charge. James is a big boy and may try to be the leader instead of letting his owners do it for him. If given proper rules, boundaries, and exercise James can be a great dog. Sammy is such a beautiful boy! Please don’t let my terrible pictures take away from that. Sammy looks so sad sitting in the back of his kennel. All the loud noises in the kennel scare him and he sits there and shakes. Poor Sammy has a skin condition as well. It looks like it might be some form of mange. Sammy is so sweet. When I sat in the kennel with him, he gently nuzzled my hand and gave it a quick kiss. Sammy is as gentle as they come. He is still pretty frighted and does not want to come out but with a little TLC and a warm comfy bed, Sammy has the potential to be a wonderful dog!
Update Sat 2/6: Sammy is a sweet, sweet boy, just very unsure of his current situation. He seems to have never been properly socialized so his new owners will need to work with him so that he can become more comfortable around people and in different situations. He was VERY interested in the camera and decided to do a close-up investigation (hence the extreme close-up photo ). He does have some sort of skin condition, probably demodex. Demodex will develop when dogs are under a lot of stress (malnutrition, weak immune system, etc) and require a lot of soothing baths, proper nutrition, and lots of love, affection, and time in order to heal. It’s not contagious, just very uncomfortable. If you have the heart to save this sweetie, please hurry in to meet him because he currently has ZERO applications or back-up rescues.
Lilac is a beautiful, shy girl that was peaking out of the back of her kennel. She wants desperately to come out and snuggle but is still not sure of her surroundings. Once she is out by herself, she turns into a lap dog. Lilac is content just sitting in the sun having her head scratched. She is very gentle and very sweet. Don’t let her shyness overshadow her loving personality.
Update Sat 2/6: Lilac is such a fun dog! She is a happy and wiggly girl who just loves people. She seems to be a submissive dog and is definitely very smart. With her German Shepherd genes and eagerness to please, she’d be the star of any obedience class and could then move on to bigger and better things such as agility or flyball. Alyssa is such a sweet girl. Alyssa, like Lilac is very shy. She is on the thin side, weighing in at only 30lbs. Though Alyssa is thin, she takes treats and food very gently. She soaks up all the attention she can get and is perfect lady. She is not rowdy nor pushy and waits patiently for her turn to play. With a little attention, she will be a wonderful dog!
Update Saturday 2/6: Alyssa looks just like a German Shepherd trapped in a 30 pound body. She’s got the coat, ears, and walk of a German Shepherd but she’s only 30 pounds. She a very quiet and shy girl and prefers the comfort of her Kuranda bed over the hustle and bustle on the outside of her run. If you’d like to visit with her you’ll probably have to go inside. Once she’s on a leash she doesn’t seem to have any problems and she seemed to enjoy her time outside with us. She took treats very gently from my hands and even jumped up to say “hello” and try to kiss my face. The only time she seemed scare or unsure was when a child skipped by. She’s probably never interacted with a child and just didn’t know what to think about the little, bouncy human. This does not mean that she can’t live in a home with children; she’ll need time to adjust and would probably do best in a home with older, more mature children who will respect her space. I’m confident that Alyssa will blossom in to a fantastic dog once she’s in a calm, stable home, so don’t let her timid behavior deter you from considering her for your family. She currently has ZERO rescue or adoption applications, so she needs someone to step-up and save her very soon.

Ally is Andy’s and Anne’s mommy. Ally is such a sweet girl and such a good mommy. Though they are in different pens, Ally comes and checks on her babies when she is being walked! From the look of his paws, Andy will probably be a heavy boy. His legs are too short and stumpy for him to be a big, tall dog, but he may be short and stout like a bassett hound. What a beauty!!! Mallory was brought in by a good samaritan. Mallory not only has a stunning coat, she has a wonderful personality. Don’t let this little beauty get away!
Update Saturday 2/6: Mallory is a gorgeous girl with the body and coat of an Australian Shepherd but the head and ears of a border collie. She’s built for fun and action, but she doesn’t seem to be very high energy. She’s got the softest coat and will wiggle her little nubby tail whenever she’s scratched. She seems to be a little overwhelmed by the pound environment, but I’m sure she’ll come out of her shell once she’s in a stable home. Aussies are a working/herding breed, so her new owners will need to provide a lot of physical and mental exercise so she stays happy and healthy. Hurry in to meet this gorgeous girl and see if she’s the right dog for you!
Camille is a senior girl who deserves so much better than spending her final days alone at a pound. She’s starting to show the signs of her age, but who can blame her when she’s 12? She seems to be suffering from some pain in her hips, has goopy eyes, and has bloody urine, all signs that she’s an old girl who’s had a long life. Even though she’s a senior, she loved going on a walk and still wanted to explore as much as possible. She’s a big girl (82 pounds) and could probably lose a few pounds so she doesn’t have as much weight on her bad hips. Please don’t let Camille’s age deter you from visiting her or considering her for your family; owning a senior pet can be very rewarding because they have so much love to give, even if it’s not for 10+ years. Please consider opening your heart and home to this sweet girl and letting her live her golden years in the comfort of a home.
Baloo is here with his pals Camille and Kayla. He’s rooming with Kayla and while she hates being separated from him, he doesn’t seem to have any anxiety when being left alone. He is suffering from some sort of skin condition and is very dry, itchy, and mostly bald all over. Where he does have hair it’s obvious that he’s got strong brindle markings that will be stunning once he’s healthy. He’ll need to be examined by a vet once adopted so that a treatment can be outlined for his skin, but quality nutrition and flea control can go a long way in improving the quality and health of his skin and coat. He could be suffering from a flea allergy, demodex mange, or a food allergy, but that needs to be determined by a vet. In spite of his physical condition, Baloo is a lovebug who doesn’t seem to be phased by his stint in doggy jail or the fact that he’s mostly bald. He probably thinks that he’s quite the good lookin’ fellow Baloo knows some basic obedience and will sit very politely for a treat or attention. He also seems to be very low energy and doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in his body. Please don’t let Baloo’s current condition deter you from adding him to your life. He will reward you with so much love, loyalty, and obedience that the money and time you put in to getting him healthy will seem like nothing. Hurry in to meet this cutie so he can charm you too!
This pretty girl is Kayla. She’s here with her friends Camille and Baloo and does not like being separated from her roommate Baloo. She seems very attached to him and will cry if someone takes him out and leaves her behind. She really enjoyed going on a walk with us and melted in my hands when I scratched her ears and rubbed her back. By the looks of her, she hasn’t missed a meal in a while and should probably shed a few pounds to be at a healthy weight. Even though she’s listed as an Akita mix, she’s probably a mixture of many, many things and just a genuine Heinz 57 dog, which is the best breed of dog in my opinion Kayla would probably do best in a home with another dog since she seems to suffer from some sort of separation anxiety. Proper exercise and training can help to control this behavior, but she would probably be happiest with a canine pal or a stay-at-home parent. If you’ve been looking for a fun companion for yourself or your pooch, please consider Kayla. She’d love it if you gave her a chance!
Hubert is pretty dang cute. He is available to rescues only because he has some lacerations on his face and right rear leg. Hubert is a bit scared yet still friendly here at the pound, and is thankful to have a warm bed to relax on and food and water readily available. If you know of a great rescue (must have GA Dept. of Ag. rescue license) that can take little Hubert in, have them contact AC soon. Hubert thanks you for thinking of him.
Update from another volunteer: In spite of his current condition, Hubert seems to be a friendly little dog. He was curled up taking a nap when I went to take him out and didn’t want to come out of the kennel on his leash. Even with his injuries, he allowed me to pick him up without a problem and didn’t even whimper at all. Once I got him out in the grass he had no problem on the leash and just sniffed around like any normal dog. His injuries suggest that he may have been bumped by a car (hit but not run over with the wheels). He doesn’t have anything that looks like bite marks…just lots of scrapes, bumps, and bruises. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s feeling a little under the weather, but with a little nourishment and TLC he should be feeling fine soon. He will need a complete exam by a veterinarian to determine the extent of his injuries, which is why he’s currently available only to rescues. Once he gets over this bump in the road and receives the veterinary care he needs the rescue that pulls him should be able to place him in no time because he’s so small and sweet. If your rescue has the space and resources to save Hubert, please contact animal control as soon as possible to begin arranging his rescue.
Update Sun 2/7: Hubert is no longer rescue only and can be adopted by the general public. Adoption applications are currently being accepted so hurry in to see if he’s the dog for you and submit and application!
