My time is up! Hurry in to give me a forever home!

  • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: Shepherd Mix
  • Gender: Male- Neutered!
  • Weight: 66 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/24/10
  • Ledger #: 30806

Hello World! My name is Jasper. I am a very sweet boy! My owners left me here but I am not sure why. They said something about moving and that they couldn’t take me with them.  I guess I need to find a new family! I am a bigger boy that very sweet. I love to snuggle up to you and give you lots of kisses. With all the strange noises and smells at this place, I am a little nervous but I am sure I will get more comfortable soon. Some nice girls gave me a bath and helped pull out some of the knots in my fur. I tried to be good for them because it felt so good to get the those pulled out (they were really pulling my skin)!  I have lived outside for most of my life but I will try my best not to mess in the house when I go with my new family. I am a quick learner and I love when people praise me (especially with belly rubs! :) ). I like to play with other dogs and little kids don’t frighten me. It’s actually a lot of fun to play with them! I hope you come to meet me soon! I would love to go home with you!

Update: Jasper is such a wonderful little boy. I took his pictures right before I sat down with him and brushed his coat out (so he still looks messy :( ). He is such a wonderful fellow. Jasper enjoyed being brushed so much that he would follow me around to make sure that I continued brushing him. He would lean against me and give me great big kisses. This is such a sweet boy. For 66lbs, Jasper is as gentle as they come! Don’t miss out on making this sweet boy part of your family today!

7/25: Jasper is completely out of time and the pound is very full! He has ZERO applications and no rescues backing him up. Please don’t hesitate to meet him.

7/28: Still NO applications and NO rescues on this handsome guy. His time is up :( He is heartworm negative, so things are looking good!

There is sponsorship money on this sweetie. Email Allyson at athenpets@gmail.com if your licensed rescue group saves him. I will put you in touch with his sponsor. Please hurry!!!!!!!  He is OUT of time!

Good news, Jasper is Heartworm negative! Jasper has sponsorship money that will go to the licensed rescue group that saves him. If your rescue group saves Jasper please contact Allyson at athenspets@gmail.com and she will put you in touch with the sponsor. Please act quickly he is completely out of time.

  • Age: 4 years
  • Breed: Rottweiler Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 61 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/25/10
  • Ledger #: 30809

Chloe has a gorgeous black coat with tan sleeves on her legs. Chloe is a very shy little girl that is also sweet and calm. It looks like Chloe has not been taken care of for sometime now. Chloe is in need of lots of TLC both physical and emotionally. Chloe shies away at first but once she figures out that you are not going to hurt her, she snuggles right up. She is very smart, she knows how to sit when you have a treat or toy. She also is very polite on leash and does not pull. She would probably do best as a single dog. When walking, she tends to growl slightly under her breath at other dogs. Chloe is an owner surrender so her time is very limited.  Come meet this sweet girl today!

7/25: Chloe is completely out of time and the pound is very full! She has ZERO applications and no rescues backing her up. Please don’t hesitate to meet her.

7/28: Still NO applications or rescue groups coming to get this girl. Her time is up.

This lab mix was as sweet as can be. He likes to play and would probably do well in a home with other dogs or in a one dog family where he will get all of the attention he deserves.  We walks well on a leash and being only 2 years old, has a ton of energy in him for any active family.

  • Breed: Pomeranian
  • Gender: Male- Neutered!!
  • Impound Date: 7/26
  • Ledger: 30817

Butler is a star here at Animal Control. He is fabulously well-behaved, and it’s virtually impossible to find a negative in this little guy. He is an owner-surrender through no fault of his own, and his time is limited. Butler is large for a Pomeranian but shares all of their characteristics, head to tail. He is already neutered and walks perfectly on the leash- hardly even one little tug! Butler, being a Pom, will need fastidious care of his coat in order not to develop painful mats and tangles. He also needs daily exercise as Poms can be active dogs, despite their ‘purse accessory’ reputation. Come visit Butler soon if you’d like to add him to your family!

  • Breed: Spaniel mix

  • Impound Date: 7/26

Scarlett is a precious little lady who has been surrendered to the pound through no fault of her own. She is the perfect size for a lapdog, weighing in at 18lbs (but could stand to lose about a pound or so to remain healthier) and enjoys human company. She’s a little overwhelmed here, but had excellent manners and didn’t overstep her bounds once, instead she was just a little reserved. Since she is only two years old, it is likely she will open up and become a little more energetic in a new home once she feels more comfortable. Scarlett has a thick red coat and the most adorable underbite around! Come visit her soon- the pound is packed and she doesn’t have much time!

  • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: Shepherd/ Flat coated Retriever mix
  • Gender: Male- Neutered!!
  • Impound Date: 7/26
  • Ledger: 30820

Axel is about a year old and full of life. He was surrendered to animal control after being adopted out as a pup last fall. His face and coat are that of a retriever, but his body is very German Shepherd-like. Because he’s already been through Animal Control’s doors, Axel is already neutered and microchipped! Axel has the potential to be a fabulous pet but hasn’t been given much training in his young life. He is quite large and needs to get daily exercise to get that young shepherd’s energy level down a bit. He is best-suited to an active individual who will happily match his enthusiasm and provide outlets for him to be happy- trips to the dog park, throwing the ball, nice long hikes. Nestled within Axel’s eagerness is a delightful, comical buddy just waiting for a forever home.

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog.

My time is up! Hurry in to give me a forever home!

IMG 8826IMG 8847IMG 8891

  • Age: 6-12 months
  • Breed: Pit Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 30 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/22/10
  • Ledger #: 30789

Fifer is such an adorable girl. Check out those curious ears! Her ears are always doing something new…and she still needs to grow into them. Fifer is ready to play! She wants to play with every dog at the pound oh so badly. She would make a great playmate for a lonely dog. She is pretty rambunctious and will need leash training. You cant judge Fifer’s energy level while she’s at the pound. She doesn’t get the exercise she needs to be calm. Plus she’s just a baby. Fifer is food motivated and will sit for a treat. She will be learning all kinds of trick in no time with the amount of drive she has. Come love on Fifer soon!

Update from another volunteer: This young and beautiful, tan-colored girl is very playful. Because of her age and lack of training, she cannot walk politely on a leash just yet. Pit bulls are easily trainable and at such a young age, there is still time for her to learn. She seems very motivated to learn and be active. She showed us that when she is focused on you (and of course when a nice treat is present) she knows how to sit on command. She would probably be best paired with an active family with a dog or two, or as a single dog who gets the exercise she will need as she grows. If you think you can show this sweet girl the love she needs, please come see her and experience her playful personality for yourself.

  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 30 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/22/10
  • Ledger #: 30790

Twiggy is one handsome pup. He waited patiently for me to open up his run to take him out for a walk. He started out calm on the leash, but once we got to the interaction area he was really excited to be around all the new sites and smells. Twiggy is long and lean and will need some fattening up. This lanky fella will probably grow up to be very large. He will need lots of room and exercise to stretch those long legs. He LOVES dogs and just wants to p lay with every dog in site. He would probably enjoy a home with another playmate, but will do just fine in an only dog environment as well. He is so fun and playful I bet he will excel in agility. Twiggy is an athletic dog looking for an active family. Are you the right family for Twiggy?

Update, 7/28: Twiggy has ZERO applications an no rescues backing her up. Her time is up so please visit her today- she may not have another day to wait!

  • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: Border Collie
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 43 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/22/10
  • Ledger #: 30791

Donatello is one gorgeous Border Collie. He is leash trained, knows basic commands, and doesn’t jump. Poor guy seems to be lost. He has a beautiful coat that shines. Donatello could lose a few pounds, but overall he is excellent shape. Border Collies need plenty of exercise and sometimes a job to be happy. Since he isn’t fixed he wants to roam. Donatello is one sweet baby that needs a home.

Update from another volunteer: This tri-colored, handsome boy is young and very polite. He is great on the leash and seems like he has been taught how to walk nicely. When walking next to the other dogs in the run, he was calm and non responsive to their barks. Overall, he is the typical border collie. They are loyal, calm and highly intelligent. This breed also loves to be stimulated and learn new tricks and have a “job” to do. They find pleasure in being active in activities such as Frisbee, chasing another dog and playing fetch. This breed would fit best with an active family that can give him all of the exercise he needs. He is also very smart and willing to learn. When presented with a treat, he quickly sat and focused. In no time, he could be learning other commands. If you think Donatello would be a great addition to your family, please come by and see this smart boy at the shelter today!

The Domino kids are quite a bunch of roly-poly puppies. They’re your typical pups- chewing on nearly everything in sight, wrestling and falling asleep in big puppy-piles, only to wake up and chew on some more things ;) ! 30801, a male, is the largest an fluffiest of the puppies and also the most dominant (sometimes acting possesive over his food with his littermates- a fact to consider for homes with little to no dog experience). 30802 and 30804 are nearly identical, except ‘04 is a female! They seem to know they look alike and are quite the pair when they cuddle together. 30803 is a male with the most white on his face of the short-haired siblings. 30805 is the second-fluffiest puppy, and is a female on the smaller side compared to her siblings. They will all likely fall generously into the mid-range for size (40-55lbs). Come visit with this crowd soon- they’ve already been in animal control for a few days now and the clock IS ticking, even for adorable little puppies like this!

She seems to want to be right by your side whenever she is out. She is super sweet and walks politely on a leash. She also seems like she is comfortable with other dogs. • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: Pit mix
  • Gender: male
  • Impound Date: 07/21/10
  • Ledger: 30787

Camo is a gorgeous pit here at Animal Control. He seems to have been in some tussles recently, and has quite a few scrapes and cuts on his face and body. Under those cuts, though, is a beautiful grey coat with tan markings. Camo is a really good-looking dog! He came in with a female lab mix (#30786) who he seemed fairly attached to, so he may do alright with other dogs- but hasn’t been ‘dog-tested’ yet. Camo is a strong boy but responded well to corrections on the leash and didn’t jump up once. He should get daily exercise- long walks or chasing a ball around the backyard- to keep him happy. Once Camo’s neutered, his need to roam the neighborhood will wane some, too. Camo needs a responsible owner who will not only keep him off the streets and out of trouble, but also give him the attention, training, and affection he deserves.

Arthur is a sweetie. It was obvious he wanted out of his run, but he dd an excellent job at containing his enthusiasm as best he could and tried not to jump. Arthur didn’t react at all to the other dogs around him, even the really loud ones. Even though he can be kind of strong on the leash, if it is kept right under his cheeks/jowls, he responds well to direction. Arthur enjoyed his time in the interaction pen to sniff, go potty, and then visit with his human companions. He was a little camera-shy at the beginning, but once he was given a chance to sniff it briefly, Arthur was perfectly fine. Arthur would love to become a part of a loving family!! Rooney is a DOLL! He is absolutely fabulous: very well-mannered and respectful of space, submissive and responsive to verbal corrections, behaved on the leash and courteous at his run. Rooney is a smallish medium-sized dog but still has some growing left in order for his legs and paws to look proportionate to his body!! Rooney also has a very striking coat- endless shades of red, brown, and black, with the neatest dorsal stripes in reddish brown down his back. His ears are a hoot- always hopping around on top of his head and giving away his emotions :) Rooney would love to have a family of his own to love him and spend time with him- he truly has a personality that says, “Love me!” (And it’s easy to do!) • Ledger: 30813

Brennan is a fabulous young dog! He is just a puppy but has amazing manners for a young boy. He’s about a year old but still has some filling out to do. Brennan didn’t try to jump up once and was very well-behaved in his run. He walked pretty well on the leash, too! Unfortunately for Brennan, brindle dogs aren’t as popular as the lighter-colored ones and often find it harder to make it out of animal controls. Fortunately for him, though, Brennan is a stunner in and out! His honey eyes match the highlights in his coat perfectly. He uses those sweet peepers to pay close attention to people around him; attentiveness is a great indicator for how easily trainable a dog will be. Brennan is on the larger end of the ‘medium’ category, but with such a great attitude he can make a stellar pet for a family of ANY size.

Andre is a little bit overwhelmed here at animal control and is beig kept in the back of the house briefly to give him time to settle in. Once he had the leash on, he was ready for adventure! He may shy away initially from contact, but if you’re calm and quiet with him he gets over himself fairly quickly. Andre LOVED going on his little walk and pranced all around. He’s got the goofiest foldy ears and serious expression (believe the floppy, bouncy ears and not the glum look on his face- he’s actually quite cheery inside!). Andre is a dear little dog who would love to get out of the scary, crowded animal control and into a calm, dependable home of his own. Come see Andre soon- and remember, if you can’t find him in the kennels, ask a member of staff!

Barnita is just one of the cutest mutts around. Because of her adorable underbite, her tongue is usually poking out just a little bit (as you can tell from her pictures). Against her black coat, her little pink tongue is so, so cute. Even though she weighs 43lbs, she is very short and is just stout. She seems to have been a mom at some point in her life and has a very loving nature. Barnita walks well on the leash and posed so nicely for the camera. • Age: 2-4 months
  • Breed: Hound Mix
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 9.5 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/17/10
  • Ledger #: 30761

Why choose Odie?

Odie is such an adorable little puppy! He was found running loose with a sweet brindle puppy of similar age who was reclaimed almost as soon as they came in, so now Odie is housed all alone.  He seems to be handling it just fine, but that’s probably because he’s so cute and lots of visitors take him out to play :) He seems to be a bright little puppy who has already learned that the best way to earn a treat is by sitting politely.  He earned quite a few treats in our time together because of his good behavior.  At about 3 months of age, Odie is at a great age because he’s nearly old enough to be able to start potty training and still young enough to be like a sponge soaking up as much as possible.  He’s a prime candidate for a puppy class so that he can be properly socialized while you’re learning the proper way to train him.  Odie is an absolutely adorable puppy who will grow in to an equally cute adult dog as long as his owners are committed to making him the best dog possible.  Remember, puppies are a life-time commitment and not a toy you keep just when they’re small and cuddly.  Odie is hoping for a hope that will love him until a ripe old age.

7/25: I can’t believe Odie hasn’t been scooped up yet. He completely out of time and the pound is very full! He has ZERO applications and no rescues backing him up. Please don’t hesitate to meet him.

Laura is such a sweet little puppy. You will have to excuse her terrible pictures and come and meet this little wiggly girl in person! Laura was so happy to come out and sit on my lap that she really did not want to hold still for pictures. This sweet little girl is as submissive as they come.  She loves to roll over and ask for belly rubs. Laura is always grateful for all the attention given to her and returns the kindness with hugs and kisses. Come and meet this sweet girl today!

Update from another volunteer: Laura is indeed very submissive! She will need a quiet, sensitive owner to build her confidence so she doesn’t flinch as much as she does with fast movements. She will likely improve even just with a stable atmosphere and time to grow comfortable with her new family. Laura is a gorgeous, lovely little dog. She’s got the classic Lab look in her head, but is more compactly built, making her the perfect size for just about any home! Laura is very eager to please and certainly will shine once she’s removed from the hectic pound and into a comfortable routine with a loving family.

7/25: Laura is completely out of time and the pound is very full! She has ZERO applications and no rescues backing her up. Please don’t hesitate to meet her.

30754 – Hugo

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog.

My time is up! Hurry in to give me a forever home!

30725b

  • Age: 4 years
  • Breed: Yellow Lab Mix
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 84 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/16/10
  • Ledger #: 30754

Why choose Hugo?

Hugo is a HUGE labrador retriever weighing in at 84 pounds.  That may not seem like a lot, but Hugo is a very tall labrador without an ounce of extra fat on his body.  He is a bit of a pushy lab and thinks that he can do whatever he wants.  It’s obvious that no one has put the training in to teaching Hugo how to behave on the leash or the proper way to meet people.  Hugo is definitely still young enough to learn, but he will need a strong owner who can handle him on the leash so he isn’t out of control.  Also, he will need to receive plenty of exercise every day so that he stays healthy and well-balanced.  Hugo will need to be incorporated into the family because sitting in the yard all day by himself will not satisfy the mental and physical exercise that he requires.  It’s possible that Hugo may already be house-trained because he pottied as soon as he was let out of his run.  Like any lab, Hugo is a happy-go-lucky boy and thinks it’s his job to make people smile :)

Hugo was reclaimed earlier in the week but was picked-up by an animal control officer the next day because he was running loose again :( He’s wearing a radio collar, but an invisible fence system doesn’t seem to be the appropriate way to keep Hugo from leaving his yard.  In Athens Clarke County invisible fences and radio collars, etc. are not considered legal means of confinement.

7/25: Hugo is completely out of time and the pound is very full! He has ZERO applications and no rescues backing him up. Please don’t hesitate to meet him.

Tiny Ferdie is an owner surrender. What a sad start to life to end up in jail. She seems to be handling it just fine. Luckily she is a staff favorite and doesn’t spend too much time in her run. She’s able to socialize with lots of people. Ferdie needs a new home that can dedicate themselves to helping her grow up to be an awesome dog. She will need to be potty trained & crate trained. She will go through teething soon and will need constant supervision. Puppies are a lot of work, but are so worth the investment. Can you be a dedicated owner to Ferdie?

7/25: Poor Ferdie is completely out of time and the pound is very full! She has ZERO applications and no rescues backing her up. Please don’t hesitate to meet this sweet little baby.

  • Breed: Shepherd Mix
  • Gender: Male — Neutered!
  • Weight: 70 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/17/10
  • Ledger #: 30760

Why choose Gonzo?

Gonzo is a big, goober of a boy who is also very scared and anxious.  He was surrendered by his owner because a baby is on the way and he’s had some aggression problems in the past.  According to his owner, he has  put his mouth on people before, but he’s never broken the skin.  One of the animal control officers has been working with him and it seems like he has fear aggression.  Once he warms up to someone, he’s a happy and wiggly boy and seems like a normal dog.  When he’s scared, he shuts down and will warn people to stay away.  As an owner of a dog who has suffered from fear aggression, I can say it’s tough to deal with but also very rewarding when you see that your dog is moving past his problems.  In the right home environment, Gonzo can overcome his fears and blossom into a well-balanced and well-behaved dog.  He will need a home where he receives a lot of exercise and where he’s given the same rules and boundaries as any other dogs; having a structured life with a calm and confident person in charge will help him overcome his issues much more quickly.  Additionally, another calm and stable dog in the home can also help to balance him out.  Because of his fear and insecurities, he would probably do best in a home without children, unless they’re old enough to understand that he needs his space.  Animal control officers have decided to make him rescue only so that he can go to a home to be rehabilitated prior to going to his forever home.  Rescues, please give this big lug of a boy a chance.  It’s not his fault that he wasn’t properly socialized when he was growing up.  With some time and training he can become a happy boy who’s a joy to own.

7/25: Gonzo is a staff and volunteer favorite. Everyone wants to see him get out of jail safely. He very much out of time and the pound is very full! He has ZERO applications and no rescues backing him up. Please don’t hesitate to meet him.

Demi is such a sweetheart! This little heartbreak loves to run and play and then curl up in your lap. Demi is very food motivated. Demi was almost able to master a “sit” command in the short time that I spent with her. Demi is very smart and very athletic. She loves to run and to play fetch. This young little sweetheart is ready to start a new life. Come down and meet this sweet girl today!

7/26: I LOVE THIS LITTLE DOG! Darling Demi isn’t getting ANY attention at all because she’s a stubby little, smoky-black Pittie girl, but I have to say that of all the dogs I loved on Saturday at the shelter, Demi has the best disposition, hands down. She is nothing but happy, wiggly, agreeable sunshine. She would be the ideal candidate in size and temperament to become a therapy dog for hospitals patients, seniors, or people with special needs. When you offer her treats, she’s polite and gentle, but when you pet her and sctratch her cheeks and offer belly-rubs she gets so happy, and leans on you so trustingly that she nearly falls over. Demi absolutely LIVES to be loved on and played with! PLEASE look past “plain little black Pit Bull” and see what a PERFECT girl she is on the inside!

7/25: Demi is completely out of time and the pound is very full! She has ZERO applications and no rescues backing her up. Please don’t hesitate to meet her.

  • Age: 3 months
  • Breed: Hound Mix

Why choose Luke?

Luke is a sweet little puppy who’s at the pound with his sister Leia (30750).  They were surrendered by their owner because dogs were not allowed in their home.  Luke looks very much like his sister except that he’s a bit larger and has darker markings on his face and ears.  He’s also a little more outgoing than Leia and doesn’t seem to be as fearful.  Like Leia, his socialization will need to start immediately because he’s in a crucial stage of behavioral development.  Puppy classes, like those taught at Pawtropolis, are a great way to socialize a puppy while learning a lot of basic obedience and getting tips on potty training.  Luke is a cute puppy who could quickly transition into a new, loving home where he’s treated like part of the family.  As an owner surrender his time is very limited so hurry in to see if this cutie pie is the one to complete your family.

Queenie was picked up with her pal (possibly her daughter?) Princess #30696.  She is a cute little girl with stumpy little legs!  She was very sweet during her photo shoot, and would even sit for a treat!  She is very interested in other dogs, and was a little reactive in her run when other dogs would walk by.  Once out of the shelter environment and with a stable leader, she could easily learn to be a calm, content dog.

Update 7/16: Queenie is out of time and desperately needs to be adopted or rescued. She currently has ZERO applications.

Spencer is very friendly without being over the top (no jumping up, etc.).  I did not see any behavior from him that would lead me to believe he is anything but good with other dogs.  He didn’t care that some of them were barking and lunging behind their kennel doors.  Spencer will walk nicely on a leash if you let him know he has to.  He went to the bathroom right out of his run so it’s likely he’s housetrained.  Spencer responds well to verbal praise and corrections but wasn’t interested in my treats……but that could have been because it was super hot and at the end of the day :) This boy is also already micro-chipped!

Update 7/16: Spencer is very much out of time and currently has ZERO applications. Don’t hesitate to meet this cutie.

There is a very generous sponsorship offer on this sweet boy! If your licensed rescue group has questions or saves Spencer, email Allyson at athenspets@gmail.com with the name and ledger # of the dog.  I will then put you in touch with her sponsor. Thanks!

Why choose Polly?

Polly is such a silly girl.  If she was a human, she’d be the one ruining the family Christmas photos by sticking out her tongue, picking her nose, or making a monkey face :) She’s not devious or naughty…just super silly.  Polly is at the pound with her pal Mary (30721) and they seem to be the perfect pair.  Polly is the happy-go-lucky and care-free one while Mary is the little angel.  They love spending time together and playing, but they’d rather be separated and have wonderful homes than die together at the pound.  Polly is a smart little girl who knows how to walk on the leash like a lady and sit pretty for a cookie.  I’m sure that she’d love to learn even more so that she could make a family very happy.  Polly should be nearly fully-grown and shouldn’t be getting more than 40-45 pounds once fully grown.  Polly would be happy in almost any home as long as they gave her tons of love as well as proper nutrition, exercise, and some rules and boundaries to make her a well-balanced pup.

Why choose Mary?

Mary is at the pound with her sister Polly (30720).  Mary is the sweet little angel while Polly is a complete clown.  Mary was right by my side almost the entire time I had her outside of her run.  She knew I had some treats in my pouch and was on her best behavior so that she could earn as many as possible.  She would look up at me with those sweet eyes while sitting so pretty that it was difficult to not just give her all the treats I had left.  Mary seems to be a very well-balanced dog who would do great in almost any home.  She already knows some very basic obedience (sit and loose-leash walking) and would probably love to learn a lot more so that she can make  a family very happy.  If you’ve been looking for a young and well-behaved dog to complete your family, look no further than sweet Mary. She won’t disappoint.

Charlotte is at the pound with her pals Hannah (30727) and Mandy (30728).  They’re sharing one of the largest runs available at animal control and are making the best of  their situation by playing, cuddling, and acting cute all day :) She has the stumpiest leg in the “pack” but makes up for her short stature with an outgoing personality.  She loves going on leash walks, being petted, and playing with her pals.  Charlotte seems to be older and more mature than Hannah and Mandy and is probably closer to a year old and nearly fully grown.  I don’t think she’ll be getting any taller but she may fill out a bit more.  Even though Charlotte seems to love the company of Mandy and Hannah, she would do just fine being separated from them as long as she was adopted in to a loving family.

  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 71 pounds

  • Ledger #: 30737

Why choose Madison?

Madison is my absolute FAVORITE dog at the pound right now! She is SO sweet and nice! Madison shoots all Rottweiler stereotypes right out the window. This girl is FANTASTIC. She is super on the leash, and quite simply one of the sweetest, calmest, most wonderful dogs you’ll meet in a long time. Gentle, too.  Madison would be a fine dog for a first time dog owner. Don’t be deterred by her age- Madison has many years left to give her new owners.  Madison came to AC emaciated, and she is quickly putting on weight but has quite a lot of weight left to gain.  Madison’s rear leg is at a funny angle, so her new owner will need to have the vet check out that leg to see if all is ok for her. She walks fine and isn’t bothered by it but she’ll need it looked at by a vet to be on the safe side.  Madison is looking for a fabulous owner who can afford years of food, training, vet bills and will treat Madison like a family member and not a living yard ornament and in return gets the pleasure of owning one of the best dogs out there who will be forever grateful that you saved her life.

There is sponsorship money on this sweet girl! If your licensed rescue group has questions or saves Madison, email Allyson at athenspets@gmail.com with the name and ledger # of the dog.  I will then put you in touch with her sponsor. Thanks!

Why choose Fozzy?

Fozzy is such an adorable fuzzy puppy! He’s currently housed all alone in his kennel so he’s a little lonely.  He loves visiting with volunteers and will cuddle in their arms.  Fozzy is such a young puppy that his new owners will be completely responsible for the dog he becomes as an adult.  Socialization and training should start immediately so that he grows into a well-behaved and well-balanced adult dog.  Even though Fozzy is small and adorable now, he’ll probably grow into a dog that’s at least medium sized (>30 pounds) once fully grown.  Remember, puppies are a life-time commitment, so Fozzy will probably be around for the next 10+ years requiring your love and attention.

Why choose Roger?

What a happy boy! Roger is a GORGEOUS red brindle pitbull who is a “repeat offender” at the pound.  He’s been here a few times before and seems to be handling his current incarceration quite well.  He loves getting out of his kennel to go on walks and play with volunteers.  He absolutely LOVES to play fetch.  He’s not the fastest dog, but he sure has fun while he’s playing.  He’ll lope after the balls, oftentimes trip over his feet a few times, kick the ball away, and eventually pick it up.  He’s such an adorable boy when he’s playing fetch.  He is an unneutered male dog so he’s currently a little too interested in the ladies, but once he’s neutered this behavior should wane.  Roger seems like a wonderful dog who would be a great addition to an active, stable home.  He will need a lot of exercise everyday and an owner who is consistent with him.  Bully breeds make wonderful pets as long as they’re given all the exercise, rules, and boundaries they need to be well-balanced dogs.  If you’re an active person and would love a new best friend, hurry in to meet this handsome boy and see if he’s the one for you.  Toss the tennis ball for him and I’m sure you’ll fall in love!

  • Breed: Yellow Lab Mix

She has the eyes and ears of a shar pei and the body of a labrador retriever.  Like many shar peis, she’s a little reserved at first, but after the initial introduction she becomes a typical happy-go-lucky pup.  She sits so politely and quietly in her run until someone takes her out.  She has wonderful leash manners and will look up with those soulful eyes every few seconds just to make sure she’s behaving appropriately.  She also knows how to sit politely for a treat and seems to be very motivated to please, so I’m sure that she could quickly learn more obedience commands.  Tillie already has the foundation to be a wonderful dog and only needs a little more training to be a perfect dog.  Hurry in to meet this sweetie and see if Tillie is the dog you need to complete your family.

30759 – Bosley

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog.

30759a30759b30759c

  • Age: 2 years
  • Breed: Pug
  • Gender: Male — Neutered!!
  • Impound Date: 7/16/10
  • Ledger #: 30759

Why choose Bosley?

Bosley is such an adorable little pug…and he’s already neutered! He loves visiting with volunteers and would be more than content to be loved and cuddled every moment of every day.  Even though they have little squashed faces that can make them very susceptible to the heat and make breathing difficult, pugs are often very active dogs who enjoy going on long walks and playing with their people.  Of course, it’s difficult for them to be out in this hot Georgia heat, so Bosley will definitely need to be an inside dog so he doesn’t overheat.  Bosley is a very sweet, well-behaved boy and seem very well cared for.  I’d be surprised if he didn’t have a worried owner searching for him.  Just in case they’re not,  Bosley will need a new home that doesn’t allow him to roam around all alone in the Georgia heat.  Hurry in to meet this cutie…he won’t be here for long!

30761 – Odie

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog

30761b30761a30761c

  • Breed: Spaniel Mix
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 27 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/17/10
  • Ledger #: 30763

Why choose Kevin?

Kevin is such a sweet, yet shy, little boy.  He’s a bit overwhelmed in the loud and noisy pound environment, but I’m sure that he’ll start to come out of his shell as he adjusts to the environment.  He knows how to walk politely on the leash, but he gets so nervous when dogs bark at him that he’ll sometimes stop and refuse to go any further.  I’m confident that once he’s in a calm and stable home he’ll start to be more himself and be a sweet and gentle boy, so don’t let his timidity at the pound deter you from adding him to your home.  This sweet boy seems like he’d be the perfect addition to almost any loving home.

She seems like she’d make a great companion so come meet her today!

30692 – Tallie

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog.

My time is up! Hurry in to give me a forever home!

  • Age: 6-12 months
  • Breed: Hound Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 15 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/6/10
  • Ledger #: 30692

Why choose Tallie?

Tallie is quite a little bundle of fun :) She’s listed as a hound mix, but with those crazy ears she probably has some sort of shepherd or collie in the mix as well.  She’s currently just a little thing…only about 15 pounds and definitely underweight.  She’s really skinny and needs to gain at least 5 pounds to be at a healthy weight.  She’s probably much closer to 6 months than 12 months of age because she looks like she still has some growing left to do.  Tallie is definitely an exuberant puppy who will need outlets for her puppy energy.  She would probably love a canine companion to run and play with but would also be happy with long walks, trips to the dog park, or maybe even some children that she can entertain.  She needs some work on her leash walking, so I’d recommend an obedience class so that you can teach her everything she needs to know about behaving on the leash as well as basic obedience.  Tallie has the potential to become a well-behaved and well-balanced dog as long as her owners are committed to giving her the exercise, rules, and boundaries she needs to be healthy and happy.

Update 7/16: I sad to say Tallie is very much out of time and has ZERO applications. Please act quickly if you are interested in adopting this sweetheart.

  • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: Shepherd/Setter Mix
  • Gender: Female — Spayed!!
  • Weight: 42 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/8/10
  • Ledger #: 30699

Why choose Sheila?

Sheila is a beautiful girl that seems to be some sort of Australian Shepherd/Border Collie/Setter mix…the perfect mix of dogs if you’re looking for a dog to do agility!  Sheila seems to be a smart girl who knows how to walk politely on the leash and sit on command.  She’s very outgoing and seems to really like people. She’s also been recently spayed and has the stitches to prove it!  She has a head-strong personality towards other dogs, but she has passed a temperament test and appears to be able to adapt in a home with other dogs.  An obedience class would be a great way to work with her because it’s a very controlled, on-leash environment where she can get much experience interacting with many different dogs.   She is a joy and a half…she just needs to be made aware who’s boss. :)

Update 7/16: I can’t believe this beautiful lady has ZERO applications. Sheila is out of time. If you’re interested in adopting you need to act fast.

Please excuse Basil’s not-so-flattering photo.  He accidentally skipped out on the last photo shoot so we’re using him impound photo for now.  It’s difficult to tell in his picture, but Basil actually has BEAUTIFUL green eyes to complement his champagne colored coat.  He’s a sweet and happy fellow who is very quiet in his run.  He just stands there and wags his tail.  He loves getting out of his run for walks and will so politely for a treat.  He also has that signature pitbull smile that can brighten anyone’s day :) Basil is more than ready for his new forever home!

  • Breed: Beagle/Basset Hound Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 23 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/11/10
  • Ledger #: 30717

Why choose Belle?

Belle is a beautiful little hound dog who appears to be a beagle/basset hound mix.  She currently weighs 23 pounds and I doubt that she’ll get as big as the average basset hound.  Like most hounds, Belle can be a bit vocal, especially when she sees other dogs.  She’s a bit socially awkward right now and doesn’t quite understand how to behave around other dogs.  She doesn’t seem to be aggressive, just very vocal and a little shy.  She’s definitely still young enough to learn how to play with other dogs so don’t let that deter you from adding her to your family.  Since Belle is a hound and has been bred to follow her nose, it’s extremely important that she is properly restrained at all times — either in the home, in a well-enclosed yard, or on a leash.  So many beagle and hound mixes just follow their nose away from home and end up in shelters…or an even sadder fate.   Belle deserves to have a home where she’s treated as a member of the family and allowed to participate in as many activities as possible so that she’s healthy and happy.

  • Age: 2-4 months
  • Breed: Shih Tzu Mix
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight: 6.5 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/12/10
  • Ledger #: 30723

Why choose Eddie?

Eddie is a sweet and special little boy.  Eddie is a bit “handicapped” because his back right leg is twisted in such a way that it provides him no support and doesn’t even move when he walks.  He doesn’t seem to have any pain associated with it so it may be a birth defect or an old injury.  Whoever adopts or rescues Eddie will need to have his leg examined by a vet to determine whether or not it can be fixed or if Eddie would be better off to have it amputated.  This is a cost than any potential adoptive parents need to take in to consideration because it is something that will need to be taken care of.  Besides his leg, Eddie is a normal pup.  He likes to hop around, is very social, and likes to cuddle.  He’s not yet very comfortable walking on the leash but that’s something that he can learn in no time.  Eddie is the recipient of a not-so-great hair cut right now and would probably benefit from a trip to the groomer as soon as he leaves the pound.  As a shih tzu, Eddie will need to be groomed every 4-6 weeks and brushed daily so that he doesn’t get tangled and matted.  Eddie deserves a wonderful home where he can be loved and cared for the rest of his life.

Update: With the money we had in the athenspets.net fund, we were able to have Eddie looked at by a vet. He had a broken leg. It is now splinted and healing nicely, and the treatment has been paid for. :-) If you’d like to help donate to the Athenspets fund (used to pay for vet care of injured/sick dogs that arrive at our shelter), look for a paypal link on athenspets.net within the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, you can go to www.paypal.com and donate to the email address, athenspets@gmail.com.  We have just used the last of our money to pay for Eddie’s treatment, so we are in need if you are able to help. Thank you! Eddie is available and ready for a forever home!

  • Breed: Pitbull Terrier Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 26 pounds

Why choose Hannah?

Hannah is at the pound with her pals Charlotte (30726) and Mandy (30728).  They’re sharing one of the largest runs available at animal control and are making the best of  their situation by playing, cuddling, and acting cute all day :) I have no doubt that Hannah is going to be the largest dogs in the “pack” and will probably top out at more than 50 pounds once fully grown.  She has an outgoing personality and loves being petted, cuddled, and played with.  She’s a happy girl as long as she’s receiving all the love and attention that she thinks she deserves.  Hannah is the type of dog that would play with you all day if that’s what you required of her.  She would love to participate in a training class so that she can learn everything she needs to know to be a well-behaved dog and a great ambassador for bully breeds everywhere.  Hannah will require a good bit of exercise as well as appropriate rules and boundaries in her new home, so make sure that you’re capable of giving her all of that for the next 10-15 years of her life before submitting an application.  Puppies are a life-time commitment!  Even though Hannah seems to love the company of Mandy and Charlotte, she would do just fine being separated from them as long as she was adopted in to a loving family.

Mandy is at the pound with her pals Charlotte (30726) and Hannah (30727).  They’re sharing one of the largest runs available at animal control and are making the best of  their situation by playing, cuddling, and acting cute all day :) Mandy may have been my favorite in the bunch.  She’s the smallest one right now and seems to be very feminine in appearance with that long face and lanky legs.  She’ll probably top out at no more than 40 pounds once fully grown.  It may be difficult to see in the photos of her, but Mandy has very unique markings.  Even though she appears to be solid black, she also has brindle markings mixed in throughout her coat, but especially on her legs and face.  Mandy seems to be a very curious and attentive dog and would even sit when I offered a treat; of course, she hopped up and wagged her tail as soon as I tried to snap a photo of her being so good :) Like her friends, Mandy loves being petted and cuddled and would love to have a family that played with her all day and included her in as many activities as possible.  Mandy will require a good bit of exercise as well as appropriate rules and boundaries in her new home, so make sure that you’re capable of giving her all of that for the next 10-15 years of her life before submitting an application.  Puppies are a life-time commitment!  Even though Mandy seems to love the company of Hannah and Charlotte, she would do just fine being separated from them as long as she was adopted in to a loving family.

Why choose Mario?

Mario is such an adorable little puppy! He’s at the pound with his friend and playmate Luigi (30730).  They’re currently sharing a run and have so much fun cuddling and playing together.  Mario is a stocky puppy with a short, docked tail, which explains why animal control listed him as a boxer mix.  He can be a little unsure when he first meets someone but he warms up quickly.  He likes to cuddle in laps and be held but he prefers to run around and play with Luigi.  If you can’t find Mario or Luigi they’ll probably be in the puppy interaction pen in the back where they’re entertaining themselves by playing with toys, balls, sticks, pine cones, each other…any thing they can get their paws on :) Since Mario is such a young puppy he’s a blank slate and will need to be taught how to be a well-behaved boy.  A puppy class (like those taught at Pawtropolis) would be recommended so that Mario can be properly socialized and his owners can learn how to train him properly.  Mario is currently a little puppy, only 8 pounds, but will probably grow in to a large, strong dog so it’s imperative that his training starts at an early age so he can grow in to a wonderful adult dog.

  • Age: 2-4 months
  • Breed: Shepherd Mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Weight: 14 pounds
  • Impound Date: 7/13/10
  • Ledger #: 30736

Why chose Lori?

Lori is such a sweet baby girl.  I interacted with her soon after she was surrendered and she was a bit scared and insecure in her new environment.  She did not like being separated from her “care-giver” Lady Elliot (30735) and would whine when they were separated.  Whenever she was with Lady Elliot she would cuddle with her and settle down once she knew that Lady Elliot would keep her safe.  Her behavior suggests that she’s never had a person give her structure, stability, and security so she’s much more trusting of her stable and nurturing “momma figure” Elli.  Lori would benefit greatly from a puppy class (like those taught at Pawtropolis) so that she can be properly socialized around other puppies, people, and situations and learn some very basic obedience along with how to be a well-behaved pup.  Puppies up to 4 months of age are in a very crucial stage of development because it’s when their most susceptible to training and socialization.  Lori can learn to be a well-balanced puppy that trusts people as she does Elli as long as her owners are committed to working with her and giving her structure and security.  Lori has the potential to become a wonderful dog, but has very limited time to find a new family because she’s an owner surrender in a very full pound.  Hurry in to meet this sweetie and see if she’s the pup you’d like to give a loving home.

Update 7/16: Lori is very much out of time and currently has ZERO applications. She’s such a cutie little lady that deserves a second chance.

Why choose Jerry?

Jerry is an absolutely adorable puppy who looks very much like a purebred labrador retriever.  At less than 6 months old he already weighs nearly 30 pounds and has HUGE feet so he’s probably going to be a very big dog once fully grown.  Like most lab puppies, he’s quite exuberant so he will need a lot of outlets for his puppy energy.  He’ll need long walks and/or playtime in the yard everyday to burn all that puppy energy.  Labs make wonderful family pets and I’m sure that Jerry would love to prove that to you.  If you’ve been looking for an active dog to complete your family, please come in and meet Jerry and give him a chance to win you over.

Why choose Leia?

Leia is a sweet and shy little puppy who’s at the pound with her brother Luke (30751).  They were surrendered to the pound because no dogs were allowed where they were living :( Leia is a bit more fearful than her brother Luke, so it may take a few minutes for her to warm up to you and allow you to pick her up so she can go outside.  Leia is in a crucial stage of behavioral development so it’s very important that her socialization starts immediately to prevent her from becoming a fearful dog.  She is definitely still young enough to become a normal, happy-go-lucky pup, so don’t let a little puppy timidity deter you from considering Leia.  After a a little time in a loving home I’m sure she’ll be a sweet and cuddly girl who’d be happy to run around the yard with some children and then pass out in some laps.  As an owner surrender, her time is very limited, so hurry in to meet this sweet girl and see if she’s the one for you.

Please use the ledger number, not the name, when calling about a dog.

My time is up! Hurry in to give me a forever home!

  • Name: Lacy
  • Age: 1 year
  • Breed: lab mix
  • Gender: Female
  • Impound Date: 7/21/10
  • Ledger: 30786

Lacy was picked up with her buddy, Camo. She’s a very sweet girl who is understandably confused and scared in the pound environment. Her photos were also taken soon after she was impounded, so she’ll likely become more comfortable in the next day or so. She shyed away from fast movement, and seems to expect that a raised hand equals pain. She will definitely need a patient, trustworthy owner who won’t use physical force for corrections. Lacy really only needs a quick verbal correction to get her attention, and some patience as she learns. She’s a sensitive dog both inside and out; Right now, Lacy is experiencing hair loss throughout her body. It looks as though it’s probably a flea allergy, which can be controlled by giving her monthly flea preventative and making sure the home is flea-free (good for the human inhabitants, too!). Lacy’s fur will grow in once she is protected from fleas, but itch-relieving shampoos can make her feel more comfortable in the meantime.  Please look past her current sad condition. Instead, imagine how fabulous Lacy will look with a shiny black coat and a loving, forever home!! It’s wonderfully fulfilling to help a dog transition into a new, happier life- will you give her the chance she needs?

***Donations Needed***

Athens-Clarke County Animal Control is seeking donations of the following items:

CANNED puppy food.

Capstar, which can be purchased at Pet Supplies Plus, a veterinary clinic, or online.

Flea preventative for all sized dogs (Frontline Plus, Advantage, Revolution).

ACCAC has had lots of lactating mommas, litters of puppies, and malnourished babies in recent weeks so they’re nearly out of canned puppy food.  Additionally, many dogs that arrive at ACCAC have fleas and/or ticks, which is why Capstar and flea preventative is needed. Revolution is best because it kills internal worms and is great for dogs with mange too.
