Why choose Me?
A story, information, and a better picture will be coming as soon as we get a volunteer out to the shelter. We went ahead and posted this fellow’s impound photo because he is in dire need of medical help. It appears he lived too long with a collar that was way too tight as you can see in the picture. The collar grew into his skin. Someone cut it off, but there is dead tissue in his neck that must be removed to prevent infection.
Update 5/3: Smiley is such a sweet dog. Even with all that he has been through, he was as patient and nice as he could be. Presently, he is inside the building since he is recovering from surgery and has stitches. As you can see in one of the pictures, he was peeking outside the window watching us as we were getting ready to take his pictures. What a cutie! Due to an ongoing investigation, he is not presently available for adoption. Information about him will be released as it is known. With the help of the Athenspets fund, Smiley received the medical treatment that he so badly needed. Please continue to give to this fund so that other dogs can be treated when they are sick or injured. We’ll let you know when he is available. He is so precious and deserves to be in a home where he will be loved and cared for.
Volunteer Update 5/14: I did not get to visit with Smiley today. He was at the vet getting his stitches out. He will probably be returning to Animal Control on Tuesday and be in an outside kennel. More people can see and visit with Smiley. Just remember he had a serious injury and is still recovering and needs to be treated tenderly. I visited with Smiley in an inside room Saturday. If he could have gotten into my lap he would have. He is a sweetie, loves attention, and loves to gives sweet kisses. His hold time is over and he has no applications. He has been at a disadvantage because he has either been at the vet or inside. Come by and visit with him soon from 10 to 4.
Update 5/13: Smiley has recovered well and is getting his stitches out tomorrow. As a result, he is now available for adoption.
Update 5/17: Smiley is out of time, has no applications, and the shelter is completely full. This is a good dog – don’t let his story end here. Hurry down to meet him before it’s too late!

Why choose Me? Sammie is very afraid of the noises of the pound and tried to belly crawl by the pens of barking dogs. Once we passed the kennels, she walked nicely on a leash. She has the sweetest face and was content to lie on the grass beside us. She just loved having her ears and back scratched. Sammie is a sweet and friendly girl that needs a new home. Please come meet her today and take her away to a calm and loving home.
Volunteer Update 5/10: I just want to give this little lady a great big hug and let her know that no one is going to hurt her. She is still a little scared of all the noises and she still tries to belly crawl past the other pens. She is getting better and her confidence is building. She is also becoming more comfortable with the leash. Her favorite thing to do is sit by you (actually she prefers sitting on your lap) and just enjoy being with a person getting petted. She’s a sweetheart.
Update 5/17: Sammie’s applications didn’t work out, so she’s out of time. The shelter is completely full – even sweet puppies like Sammie are at high risk of being euthanized simply because the shelter is out of space. If you think she might be a good fit for your family or in your rescue, please contact the shelter IMMEDIATELY.

Why choose Me? Ginger is a well behaved young lady who walks nicely on a leash and takes treats gently. She is also already spayed! You can tell she is part hound because her nose was to the ground taking in all the scents of the pound. When she’s not sniffing, Ginger loves being petted and will sit for a treat with some encouragement. Later, each time that I passed Ginger’s kennel, she was sitting calmly waiting to be taken out. Come take Ginger out for a walk today and find out what a great dog she is!
Volunteer Update 5/14: Ginger has been one of my favorites since she first came to Animal Control. She is so polite and sits quietly in her kennel waiting for a visitor to come take her for a walk. She may get a little excited when she first leaves her kennel, but she settles down very quickly and walks very nicely. She is learning sit and sits very nicely for treats. She is a sweetheart and loves any attention that is given to her. Come see this young lady and see if she if she could be your girl.
Update 5/17: Ginger is out of time and has no applications. The shelter is completely full, so her situation is urgent!

Why choose Me? Midnight was very shy about coming out of his kennel, and I had to have help from one of the workers he has bonded with. Once he trusts you, he warms up to you quickly. He loves sitting by your side getting attention. He walks well on a leash, sits on command, and will come when you call him. He’s a beautiful, sweet, and affectionate dog. If you’re interested in taking him out, give him a moment to get to know you. When I left, he was already making friends with another volunteer.
Volunteer Update 5/15: Midnight and I had so much fun playing fetch and running together in the large interaction pen. He was good about bringing the ball back and most of the time he would drop it for me. He never jumped on me or was rough when we were running back and forth. He loves attention and wants to please. When he is praised, his tag just wags and wags. He’s an absolutely wonderful dog!
Update 5/15: Midnight’s situation is urgent – the shelter is completely full and, as is typical for bigger, older, black dogs he’s had no interest. He’s a good boy, but not pushy so he doesn’t stand out in the shelter setting. However, this is exactly the trait that will make him a great family member if he’s given the chance.
Update 5/17: Midnight’s hold period is up and he has no applications Contact Animal Control ASAP if you can rescue or adopt Midnight!

Why choose Me? Rusty is a friendly boy and wagged his tail most of the time that he was out. He is strong and pulls on the leash, so borrow one of the sturdier leashes from Animal Control to walk him. When another dog growled at Rusty, he didn’t bark or growl back. Later, when another pitbull passed him while he was in an interaction pen, Rusty was friendly. He did howl, but it was more like a greeting. This happy boy loves going for walks and getting attention. He has a beautiful, smooth coat and a great smile. Come meet and get to know Rusty today!
Update 5/13: While he looks like a tough guy, Rusty is a big marshmallow. He’s friendly and cuddly, and desperate for attention – he chews on the grating at the front of his run and makes the most pathetic, yet soft, crying noises when he’s locked in. (Apparently he’s accustomed to being kept in a pen and it’s clear he hates that sort of life, so he needs a home where he can be an inside dog.) But as soon as you approach him, he smiles and waits calmly.
Rusty is strong and can be hard to control using the small slip leads Animal Control provides, but he isn’t really trying to get away – he just wanted to get to a bush so he could relieve himself. His run was clean even though I think I was his first visitor of the day, so housetraining him should be easy.
Update 5/17: Rusty is quite agreeable with other dogs. He was introduced to Herbie (35618), another unneutered male pit mix, today and they got along great, both very polite and appropriate. He’s a very nice dog!
Update 5/17: Come meet Rusty soon ! Rusty’s hold period is up, and with Animal Control as full as it is currently, his situation is urgent! He currently has no applications

Why choose Me? Ella is an energetic girl that was excited to be out. She was curious about other dogs but didn’t bark at them. This friendly girl loves belly rubs and enjoys walks but does pull on the leash. She can sit nicely but not always on command. This was her first day at the pound and there were just too many interesting things going on to distract her. Ella needs lots of exercise, so come take this sweet girl for a walk today!
Volunteer Update 5/15: Ella showed me her affectionate side today. We were in an interaction pen, and she pressed against me and looked up at me with the sweetest face as I was petting her. Yes, she still needs to work on her leash manners, but it’s not her fault that she hasn’t had that training. She’s a sweet girl and needs someone to love her and work with her. Please give this young girl a chance.
Update 5/17: Ella’s situation is urgent. Ella’s hold time is up, and the shelter is completely full. She currently has no applications.

Sweetest. Dog. Ever! Sophie is at that wonderful tweenager stage – old enough to sleep through the night, but still wonderfully floppy and wiggly and simply joyous at all the fun there is in life. It was a muddy day, but Sophie didn’t mind – she pounced and slid around the interaction pen. It was hard to get a good picture of her since every time she realized she was on the other side of the pen from me she’d come running over to cuddle close, leaning her head adoringly against me.
Sophie is a wonderful pup, but even wonderful pups need to have luck on their side when Animal Control is full. Come down to meet her before it’s too late!
Update 5/17: Sophie’s hold period is up as of today and she has no applications

Why choose Me?
Ericka is still a puppy and is the lovingest thing I’ve ever met at Animal Control. Gentle, cuddly, and submissive toward people and other dogs, she greets the world with a belly-crawl, a madly wagging tail (whole rear-end wags perpetually), a constant Pibble smile, and rubs all over you like a kitten, as though saying “hi there – don’t mind me; I’m just gonna wrap myself around your legs and become part of you.”
Ericka pushed her head right through the slip lead when I offered it, but was a little scared and nervous to be out at first. I took her to a play pen and sat on the ground, where she crawled into my lap. That’s where we stayed for 10 minutes as she absorbed all the attention and petting I could provide. She is treat and praise-motivated and wants to meet EVERYONE she sees, showing all the appropriate puppy-play behaviors in a very low-key way.
Ericka has what appeared at first to be scabbed puncture wounds on her neck, chest, armpits and legs, BUT they aren’t injuries at all – they’re dying ticks! She had a heavy infestation upon arrival but was just treated with Capstar and Frontline. I picked off dead ticks by the dozen – her sensitive pink skin reacts with a red welt any place they bite. She should heal fast. She let me handle her all over, including inspecting all her teeth, her eyes, her ears, squeezing her paws, rubbing her belly, lifting her tail – she just soaked up the attention and kept wiggling her butt the whole time. She’s not a licker; she’s a leaner and a nuzzler and a born lap-Pittie.
Despite her mostly-white coloring (a round brown spot on mid-back and a brown patch on her rump that includes 2/3 of her tail) she appears to have full hearing. She responds to whistles, hand claps, and the sound of your voice.
I love the Pitties, but also know they are not always beginner’s dogs. However, I believe Ericka would fit into ANY family, with kids, cats, other dogs of all sizes, as long as she’s loved and gets attention. She is so mannerly and submissive I would worry about a very assertive dog bullying her.
Ericka’s stray hold will end this Thursday. Animal Control is completely full – come meet her today as none of the dogs can count on any extra time as long as the shelter stays full.

Why choose Me?
What a lovebug! Herbie is a sweet and submissive pit mix boy, low to the ground and solidly built. He leans in for a scratch or a cuddle and takes treats very softly – he loves human contact without being needy. He whimpers softly in his run, then erupts in wiggles and smiles at any attention.
I suspect that Herbie and Ericka (#35617) are siblings – they were found together, are about the same age, and have the same blocky build. They’re also both wonderful – friendly, well-adjusted, and bouncy without being annoying. Herbie, though, will have a harder time being placed – while he looks like a negative image of Ericka, black dogs are hard to photograph. They also get out of shelters at much lower rates than lighter-colored dogs.
This is a sweeeet pup - come by to meet Herbie soon. Animal Control is completely full so each of the dogs is living on borrowed time, even the puppies like Herbie.
Update 5/17: Herbie’s hold period is up as of today and he has no applications. He’s a good pup – he likes other dogs and is friendly/submissive to people. Please come down to Animal Control to meet Herbie if you think he might be a good fit for your family!

The note on Griffin’s run says that he’s shy at first, but I didn’t see that at all. Instead, he was friendly and curious without being pushy. Why choose Dove?
Dove is a sweet young Pyrenees, as demonstrated by the unique breed-trait of polydactyly on her back feet (and of course the abundance of white fur). Dove is very sad at the pound. The entire front of her run was covered in drool from her nervous panting. She was gentle on a leash but so sad and afraid. She is quiet despite the chaos at the pound, and just needs a more stable environment to flourish in. Can you find room for this gentle giant? She’s a very good girl and she doesn’t know why she’s at the pound

Copper is as friendly as he is handsome. He is happy to be handled and loves to be groomed. He didn’t mind being posed, having his ears handled, and walked nicely on a leash. Why choose Jane?
Jane was brought in with her sister Emma. They don’t seem entirely accustomed to human interaction. They have some lacerations on their legs, etc, as though they have been roughing it together for a little while. That said, they are just shy—not at all aggressive or unpredictable. Jane is the less outgoing of the two, but she did let me take her out and she did give some kisses. She has a soft mouth and was fine on a leash. All Jane needs is to find out how great pet life is and she will come right out of her shell–can you come and turn her life around for the better?

Why choose Emma?
Emma came in with her sister Jane. While the pair seems unsocialized, Emma is the more outgoing of the two. She was eager to take treats and I had an easier time coaxing her into a lead than her sister. Like Jane, Emma has some lacerations on her legs, etc., but she is sweet and kissy despite whatever the two have endured together. Since she loves treats, she will be a fun little girl to train. She is really bonded with her sister–they cuddle up together in their run. The two would be fine apart, but maybe you want to adopt two playmates at once?? Come and meet this adorable pair

Poor Max came in while I was photographing other dogs. He is very depressed to be at the pound. He wouldn’t be coaxed from the back part of his run, although he let another volunteer and me come as close as we liked (so at least I got a run picture, so you can see his sad sweet face). I hope that Max will calm down a bit in the next few days so that people can see what a lovely dog he is; please stop by and share some loving words to reassure him!

Why choose Me?
Buster is very shy at first. When you enter his pen in takes a minute for him to trust you, but if you’re patient he’ll approach you and reward you with some affection. Once you get him out of his pen, though, he turns into a completely different dog! He is playful, energetic, and has a great love for life! He was curious but very friendly to all other dogs and people we encountered (even the donkey)! Buster is an awesome dog who can’t wait to be part of your family.
Volunteer Update 5/1: You talk about a poster dog for Pit Bulls well here he is. Buster is still a little shy and is often overlooked because he is so quiet in his kennel. He sits there quietly waiting for someone to walk him. He is very polite while you put the leash on him. He has a tendency to pull a little on the leash but if you correct him he walks like the gentleman he is. Buster is not bothered by the other dogs and the noises at animal control. I am not sure I have ever heard him bark and I have walked him many times. He is quite intrigued by Dominic, the donkey that is visiting at animal control. Today I watched as Buster was getting a bath in the outside doggie bathtub. I was amazed how he just stood there very politely for his bath. In fact he was so at ease that he just lay down in the tub. I wish I could bring my dog to animal control to get some bath lessons from Buster. Buster is a sweetheart who loves people and appreciates any attention that is given to him. If you think Buster might work for you hurry to animal control to see and visit with him. His hold period is over and he has no applications. Animal control is closed on Wednesday. However if you are interested in Buster it would be advisable to call (706-613-3540) tomorrow (Wednesday) around 8 o’clock and ask about Buster.
Volunteer Update 5/3: I just can not say enough good things about this boy. He is one of my favorite dogs at animal control. He is a little shy. If you want to walk Buster ask for a sturdy leash. Also if Buster acts shy and you need help getting him out just ask a worker for assistance. One other thing about Buster–he seems to be housebroken. His keeps his run clean and when he goes for a walk he takes care of his pottying. He is a lovable dog who will bond very closely with the special person who takes this gem home.
Volunteer Update 5/7: A question has come up as to what breed Buster is. He is listed as Pitbull Mix but some people are thinking he looks more like an American Bull Dog/Mastiff mix. Whatever breed he is Buster is one of the sweetest and gentlest dogs at animal control. He loves attention but waits politely in his run for someone to take him for a walk. He enjoys going for walks, investigating all the sights and smells, and getting petted and loved on. However Buster is living on borrowed time. If you think Buster is the right dog, come and check him out. He can be visited at Animal Control from 10-4 today (Monday) and Tuesday. You must hurry in order to save him.
Volunteer Update 5/10: There are a few things that have changed about Buster. It seems his breed was listed incorrectly and that he is actually an American Bulldog mix. Another thing is Buster has begun to show that he can bark when needed. I think there are two reasons for his increased vocalization (1) Two rather vocal beagles have moved in next door to Buster. Buster sees how much attention they are getting and he might be thinking maybe if I bark people will know that I am here and I can get more walks. (2) Buster has been at Animal Control sinceApril 26. If I had been in a kennel that long, I would be doing a lot more than barking.
One thing that has not changed about Buster is his sweet and gently personality (see previous updates above) In fact today, a young man visiting from Colorado was walking Buster. I asked him what he thought of Buster. His comment was “This is one awesome dog!” What more can be said? Buster needs a home or rescue now. He has sponsorship for an approved rescue. If you think this awesome dog is a good fit for you, hurry down to Animal Control to visit Buster. His time is very limited.
Update 5/9: Buster’s situation is urgent. He’s by far the longest term resident at Animal Control and, while he’s a volunteer favorite, he can’t be held indefinitely – longterm confinement is simply not healthy for dogs and the shelter has limited space.
Update 5/14: Currently Buster has no rescue or adoption applications Animal Control is completely full – Buster needs a guardian angel to come through for him IMMEDIATELY.
There is sponsorship money on Buster! If your licensed rescue group can save him, email Allyson at athenspets@gmail.com for sponsorship information! Hurry!

Why choose Me?
Ruthie and Rufus are strays that came in together. They are both big, beautiful dogs. When we began walking, Ruthie did pull more on the leash than Rufus, but by the time we returned to her kennel, she was walking nicely. Like Rufus, she was curious about her environment but was good at following directions and would sit and stay.
Ruthie likes attention, doesn’t bark at other dogs, and is well behaved. Like Rufus, she handled her first day at Animal Control very well. Surely, their owners will reclaim this beautiful pair. If not, come meet Ruthie to see if she would fit into your family.
Update 5/13: I visited Ruthie for the first time today and was impressed at how sweet she was. While she wasn’t on my list of dogs to photograph, I couldn’t help but take her out to an interaction pen for a few minutes when I saw how eagerly she responded when I walked by her kennel on the way to get Sophie (#35616). Ruthie looks a bit more Rottie in person than in her photos – while her face is longer and leaner, suggesting that she has some coonhound or doberman in her, she’s solidly built like a Rottie. She was anxious to get into an interaction pen and went to the bathroom almost immediately so she may be housetrained. Afterward, she was quietly affectionate. This is a really good dog – please consider adopting or rescuing her!
Volunteer Update 5/15: It is hard to believe that Ruthie is still at Animal Control. She is the sweetest little lady. She sits quietly in her kennel waiting for someone to take her for a walk. She waits very politely for you to put on the leash and then walks like a pro. Today she and I spent a great deal of time in the interaction pen. Ruthie sat very quietly at my feet watching all the going ons. She was very happy to be petted and was in no hurry to return to her kennel. All the dogs and noises at Animal Control have no effect on Ruthie. She also appreciates getting treats and takes them very gently from your hand. Ruthie deserves to have her own home. If you think she is the dog for you, you need to act quickly. Ruthie is living on borrowed time and Animal Control is full. Animal Control is closed on Wednesday but if you want to call about Ruthie you need to call 706-613-3540 as early as possible tomorrow morning (Wednesday) They start answering the phone at 8 o’clock. There is a generous amount of sponorship money on Ruthie for a licensed rescue group to rescue Ruthie. She is a real winner don’t let her life end at Animal Control.
Update 5/15: Ruthie is out of time and has no applications Her situation is urgent – without a rescue or adopter today, it is very likely she will be euthanized tomorrow since the shelter is completely full.

Why choose Me? This sweet boy wants to be your buddy. He is so gentle and only wants to sit beside you. They are both so sweet and loving. I did not get to visit with Buddy. He was on his way to the vet to get his eye attended to. Thanks to your contributions to the medical fund at athenspets.net Buddy was able to visit the vet. Unfortunately due to the large number of dogs requiring medical attention that have been at Animal Control lately the fund is running pretty low. Any contributions donated to the fund are greatly appreciated. The medical fund is the only way these dogs can get medical attention. Buddy will probably be returning to Animal Control tomorrow. Make sure you stop by to visit this boy. He is a sweetheart and loves any attention given to him.
Volunteer Update 5/14: Buddy has been at the vet the last couple of days. Unfortunately he has not been at Animal Control for people to visit with him to see what a sweet pup Buddy is. During this vet time his hold period ended and Animal Control is full. He is living on borrowed time. Hopefully, Buddy will return on Tuesday and get to visit with people. I visited with Buddy when he first arrived at Animal Control and he won me over immediately. He just wants to sit beside you or in your lap getting all the attention he can get. Come see this sweet boy.
The Athenspets fund could use your help to have him treated. We have had quite a few injured dogs to care for lately, Hart (35605) being another current one. The fund is being used faster than it is being replenished! To donate towards Buddy and Hart’s treatment, click here. Thank you!
Can you sponsor Buddy’s rescue? If you are able to pledge an amount to donate to a rescue group to save him, email Allyson immediately at athenspets@gmail.com. Include the name and ledger number as well as the amount you would like to donate on his behalf. Hurry!

Why choose Me? Skippy is a beautiful dog and the first Schipperke that I’ve met. He’s good natured and playful. He was curious about other dogs but didn’t bark at them. He walked well on a leash and loved attention. He has the cutest curled tail with just a dab of white on the tip. Come play with Skippy today!

Why choose Me?
Hart needs a lot of TLC. He was dumped at a church up the road from Animal Control and hit by a car. As a result, he has a fractured leg. He was also found dehydrated and malnourished. Presently he is waiting for funding from the Athenspets fund to be treated by a vet. The Athenspets fund is in need of more donations so Hart and others can be given the treatment they need.
Even in his present condition, Hart nestled into a volunteer’s arms and pressed as close as he could against her. I’m amazed that he could even trust a human after the way he has been treated. His wounds were fresh and yet he never whimpered or snapped. He just wanted to be held and loved. With his injuries, Hart is only available to rescue. Please give to the Athenspets fund for Hart and others. This sweet and loving boy needs to be saved.
Volunteer Update 5/10: Even though he did not get the best of reports, Hart is thankful for the contributions to Athenspets.net medical fund so he could be seen by a vet. It seems his fractured leg was not the result of being hit by a car. Hart has suffered several fractured bones in his life due to abuse–being kicked, beaten and so forth. He also has hip dysplasia and if he survives he would be arthritic at a young age. It is very possible that Hart will be euthanized to spare him more pain. He is on pain medication right now and further treatment is being discussed. Unfortunately, because of the number of dogs that have come in recently (Smiley, Roscoe, Buddy, and Hart to mention a few) requiring medical attention the medical fund is running pretty low. Any contributions to Athenspets.net to assist in medical needs of the dogs is greatly appreciated. Without your generosity, the pups would not be able to receive medical attention.
Hart in his very short life has suffered immensely. This poor pup has lived a life of neglect, pain, and suffering. Despite all this mistreatment, Hart is a sweetheart and loves people. If you come to Animal Control stop by and visit with Hart. Even though Hart can not be walked, if he sees you at his kennel door, he will come and press his body against the kennel door just so you can pet and talk to him. Hart loves treats and takes them gently from your hand. He told me to tell you he really likes Pupperoni dog treats but he appreciates any treat that you have. Come visit this very special pup.
Update 5-11 – Hart is being treated by Athens Regional Veterinary Clinic. They are wonderful there! They fell in love with this boy and wanted to brag on his tender heart and sweet nature. No matter how much pain he was in, he was always full of VERY sweet kisses and was loving to everyone he encountered. The office staff fell in love with his gentle spirit. He truly is a special guy worthy of a home where he will be treated like the little prince that he is. Hurry in to save this beautiful dog!
Update 5/13: While Hart is technically only available to rescue, the Animal Control Officers told me today that he could actually be adopted, as long as his adopter understood Hart’s medical issues and was committed to caring for him. If you adopt or rescue Hart, be sure to ask for his vet’s contact info so you can receive his x-rays and other medical info.
I sat with Hart for a bit today in his run, and he was quiet and well-mannered. He’s been eating well and has started to put on some weight – he particularly likes canned puppy food and soft treats. He didn’t show any signs of fear despite his obvious earlier mistreatment – he seems pretty content at Animal Control.
Volunteer Update 5/14: I visited with Hart on Saturday and Monday. On Saturday, he was a little sleepy and not very hungry. I think the pain medication he is on had a lot to do with how he felt. He still enjoyed having visitors. Today, Hart was acting more like himself. He was again walking in his kennel and wiggling all over when a visitor came by. He also had his appetite back. I am amazed at the change in his appearance. He has a lot more meat on his bones and has gained around 5 pounds. His coat and the abrasions on his body are looking a lot better. Hart is one of the sweetest, most loving, and forgiving dogs I have ever seen. Despite the abuse he suffered he loves humans and wants to be as close to them as possible. If you come to Animal Control, make sure you stop by and visit with this great pup. Unfortunately Hart’s hold time is over and he has no applications. He needs that very special person or rescue to come to his aid quickly.
Update 5/14: Unfortunately the shelter is completely full and since Hart’s hold period is now up and he has no applications, he is not guaranteed any further time.
The Athenspets fund could use your help to have him treated. We have had quite a few injured dogs to care for lately, Buddy (35599) being another current one. The fund is being used faster than it is being replenished! To donate towards Buddy and Hart’s treatment, click here. Thank you!

Why choose Me? Kip is shy about meeting new people, and I had to have help getting him out of his pen. Once I had him in my arms, he wanted to stay there. He’s very afraid of being at the pound and pressed as close to me as he could. After I spent time with him, he did calm down and gave me little kisses as I held and petted him. At this point, he wasn’t interested in walking on a leash. He just felt more secure being held. Come meet Kip today and take him to a calmer place where he can feel safe. He’s a very sweet boy that needs to be held and loved.
Volunteer 5/10: Kip is a great example of what a volunteer can do to help a scared dog at Animal Control. Kip is very frightened and every time I passed his kennel, he was sitting in the back. Often when he saw you he would move further back in his run. Later in the day, I observed a volunteer enter his kennel. This volunteer was very patient with Kip. Throughout the afternoon I noticed by his actions and kindness he was able to build the confidence in Kip that allowed him to go from just observing Kip to petting Kip to having Kip nestled in his arms. Kip will need people like this special volunteer to help him trust people and come out of his shell.

Why choose Me? Bubba and Buddy (35599) are pen mates and came in together. He was uncertain of the leash and was afraid of the other dogs. His ears have been chewed on, and I really don’t want to imagine the life he has already endured at such a young age. Still, he is as sweet and loving as he can be. He craves attention and stayed close to us. Please give this sweet boy a chance. Show him that people can be loving and life can be good.
Volunteer Update 5/10: Bubba may look rough on the outside (cuts and scrapes) but he is beautiful on the inside. He is quite mellow for a pup his age. He is getting accustomed to the leash and is walking very nicely. He is interested in his surroundings and seems to be more comfortable with the noises and the other dogs at Animal Control. Bubba is very content to sit on the bench right beside you and watch all the activities.

Why choose Me?
Beulah is one of three big Bulldog/Boxer-type older sweethearts that were brought to the shelter on Saturday morning. The three dogs are bunking together – Willie (#35622) and Beulah are the parents of Waylon (#35621) – and get along great. As middle-aged dogs, this family is past the rowdy youthful stage and ready for daily walks and couch time. The trio came to Animal Control after their owner passed away and they had nowhere else to go.
This gentle lady is a little chunky and very stately, but sweet, affectionate and well socialized, with natural ears and tail.
All three of these Bully darlings have very kind, friendly, outgoing dispositions. They interact beautifully with each other despite being unaltered – no family rivalry over treats or attention, or when other dogs are being walked by them. They loved getting treats and scratching and petting. They have very sensitive skin and it appears they could use a better quality diet and regular flea preventative. All have some irritation on paws, bellies, and muzzles, but with some TLC their skin and coats should get back into top condition. Any one – or all three – of these pups would make fine companions for a single, couple or family.

Willie has cropped ears and a docked tail; someone tried to make him look like a Dogo Argentino with that ear crop, but he does not have the face, build, or stance of a Dogo. He’s a pretty good body weight and is up to date on his shots.

Why choose Me?
Ever wish for a pup that, when he grew up, still looked like a puppy? If so, Doug is your guy! While he has the charming cute looks of a puppy, based on his teeth the Animal Control Officers think he’s about 3 years old (I even double checked at the front desk on my way out because I was sure his age was recorded incorrectly, but they confirmed it for me). Doug is affectionate and playful but not too energetic – he likes to check things out, but is happiest cuddling close. He’s got a beautiful chocolatey coat and looks fairly well cared for.
Come meet Doug ASAP; Animal Control is completely full so no dog – even a cutie like Doug – can count on any additional time.

This little guy has spunk. He is young and impressionable–he didn’t quite understand the leash, but for a few treats along the way, he figured it out! Spike will be a joy to train.
